What's happening with electricity in Poland?

What do electricity prices for companies depend on?
The price of energy for companies depends on the market price of electricity. This applies especially to forward contracts, i.e. bilateral agreements in which the seller undertakes to deliver energy at a set price (and a specified time), while the buyer agrees to the presented conditions. The total cost also includes VAT, excise duty, balancing costs, margin and certificates of origin of energy.
Electricity price freeze – until when?
The situation on the energy market has been unfavourable for several years, and market prices of energy have reached dizzying amounts. This translates into costs borne by entrepreneurs whose activities require high electricity consumption. For this reason, legislative solutions supporting electricity recipients came into force in 2022. According to them, electricity prices were frozen to specific limits. Protection was extended not only to households, but also to micro, small and medium-sized companies and local government units.
The Act was amended successively in 2023 and 2024. According to the current regulations, energy prices will be frozen until September 30, 2025.
Small, large and medium-sized companies – electricity prices
Micro, small and medium-sized entrepreneurs are covered by the Act on the Protection of Electricity Consumers. The electricity price increase does not pose a threat to them until the regulations are in force. What is the maximum price for energy in their case? Until March 30, 2025, it will be PLN 693/MWh net (the amount does not include VAT or excise tax). Importantly, the price applies only to energy consumption for basic business purposes.
What about electricity prices when the regulations cease to apply? It is difficult to predict how this will develop, and many economists believe that protecting electricity consumers will have negative consequences in the form of significant price increases.
Why are electricity prices rising?
